Grease.
The Do's & Don'ts on Grease.
Do's
Grease everything at least every year. A good rule, use a little but often.
Clean all parts before greasing, any dirty grease can turn into a grinding paste.
Remove all old grease before repacking any parts with new grease. This is essential if you’re unsure of what type the old grease is!
Ensure that any container used to take grease from the tin is clean.
Wipe any excess grease off the parts greased after you have finished .
Ensure all lids are kept on any containers to prevent contamination.
Don'ts
Grease has a lifespan of around 2 years, throw any grease away which is older.
Never mix grease, mixing grease will soften both and it won’t last or perform properly.
Never over grease drum brakes; grease can ruin the brake linings.
Don’t over apply grease. Too much grease applied to wheel bearings will churn up and will cause the bearing to run at a much higher temperature causing it to fail prematurely.
Never use Moly grease on roller bearings, this can cause the rollers to slide rather than roll. This could cause the rollers to develop flat spots.
